In Brazil, five summers ago, I was chopping it up with a native Rio De Janeirian, aka a carioca, and I mentioned that I lived in the SF Bay Area. “San Francisco?!” he exclaimed, “That’s the most beautiful place in the world!”
Keep in mind, he lives in Rio De Janeiro, which looks like this:

So, after 8 years, almost to the day, I am leaving the most beautiful place in the world for LA.
There shall be more reminiscing posts to follow, but for now, I am celebrating (is that the right word?) my farewell this week at two events:
THURSDAY AUG 28:
DEVIL’S PIE – LOVELEE EDITION | 1-YR ANNIVERSARY

In August 2007, after quitting my job and touring Southeast Asia, I linked up with David, Dennis, Dan, Paul, Mayra, and the rest of the family at Namu Restaurant & Bar to start a party that I had dreamt of doing for several years. One year and six soul tribute nights later, we’ve come to the end of my reign as organizer, promoter, and resident selector for Devil’s Pie, my twice-a-month Soul party.
Don’t worry folkers: Devil’s Pie will continue to run and flourish under the capable hands of Devil’s Pie family Paloma, Do D.A.T., and our new resident dj/musical director Wonway Posibul.
We’re celebrating our first birthday with a set from one of the Bay Area’s most important and influential tastemakers: DJ Lovelee.
Thursday Aug. 28
Devil’s Pie: Lovelee Edition | 1-Yr Anniversary

LIBRE – DJ PHATRICK’S OFFICIAL FAREWELL PARTY

This might be one of the last times you’ll see the Trick N Treat DJs (DJ Treat U Nice, DJ Phatrick, and emcee Do D.A.T.) rock a party together for a long time. If you’ve ever been to the legendary Hella parties, or any other party where Treat and I have spun together, you know that I know that you know that the world knows that Trick N Treat will keep you on the dancefloor for a solid 5+ hours.
Friday Aug. 29

I remember a year ago, Steph and I were sitting on the homie Ben’s couch at his house in Saigon, Vietnam, and listening to a leaked version of M.I.A.’s second album, Kala. To be honest, on first listen, we weren’t feeling it. Keep in mind, we were HUGE fans of Arular. Feeling a little disappointed, my impatient ass was about to turn the stereo off and go on a bahn xeo run when the Clash horn/guitar sample that opens “Paper Planes,” blasts through the speakers. Needless to say we forgot about the crepe.
Today, I still consider Arular a stronger album then Kala. But “Paper Planes” is M.I.A.’s greatest song made thus far in her career…and a year later, it’s spreading beyond her typical indie-electronic-blipster-ilovebailefunk-progressive fanbase. spreading fast.
CASE IN POINT 1:

(via the usual suspects)
This song from T.I.’s Paper Trail, which might possibly be the greatest collabo track of 2008, samples a line from “Paper Planes.” The credits should really say “featuing M.I.A.” since she, by far, as the greatest swagger of all the voices on the track, [wink].
CASE IN POINT 2:
The Pineapple Express trailer:
BONUS 1:
Diplo, the producer of “Paper Planes” and M.I.A. (they were once a couple) at home singing an early version of the song.
BONUS 2:

The original sample for “Paper Planes”, from the classic album Combat Rock by The Clash.
BONUS 3:
The fambam, Blue Scholars, doing their version of “Paper Planes” at ECAASU.
UPDATE:
“Swagger Like Us” is produced by Yeezy.

Smoking Section has been doing an excellent three-part tribute to De La Soul, the pinnacle of which is DJ Sorce-1’s interview of Prince Paul: producer of the first three De La Soul albums and one of the greatest innovators and creative minds in Hip Hop.

I think there is definitely a collective consciousness thing going on here. Recently, there’s been several posts about De La Soul, including mine.

via Notes from a Different Kitchen and Nahright:
This is a beautifully shot short about Paul Mawhinney and his records, which he owns more of than anyone else in the world. Before watching it, I had seen it posted a couple of times, and decided to ignore it, thinking it’d be another dry feature of someone and his collection. But, it’s actually kind of a tragic story about a man and his relics from a bygone era; a victim of the supposed “death of vinyl.”
I, by no means, am a vinyl-only snob; Serato has been a life saver. However, I love vinyl. I love the thrill of finding a soul classic in the dollar bin. I love the sound when you first drop the needle onto the groove and the ensuing static and scratches that soothe you before the music comes on. I love 12″ by 12″ album cover art, something you can never appreciate with cd inserts or tiny .jpg mp3 icons in iTunes. I miss frantically flipping through vinyl during a set to find the right song; I miss the actual physical motion of having to put a new vinyl on the tables after each song. Scrolling through playlists and hitting Shift-Left or Shift-Right ain’t the same.
With each step of technological advancement that makes art easier and more accessible, I feel the soul being taken away from it little by little. It’s those flaws, that difficulty in achievement, that made some things special. Shit, kids don’t even have to experience a record skipping anymore…
I remember the scene in Scratch where DJ Shadow is sitting amongst thousands of stacked LPs and he talks about it being a humbling experience going through these piles of “broken dreams.” For a lot of musicians, those vinyl, those LPs with their name in the title or credits, are the only proof that they ever existed and created art.
Right now, our art, our work, ceases to exist in the physical realm. They exist in 0’s and 1’s that can be lost at the whim of our capricious external hard drives.
