Fuck Song of the Day: Zap Mama – “Damn Your Eyes”

Been sittin’ on this for a minute, sorry.

DOWNLOAD: Zap Mama – “Damn Your Eyes”
From the album Seven (Luaka Bop, 1997)

Do you know the lead singer of Zap Mama, Marie Daulne’s, story?! Marie’s father was a white Belgium and mother a African Bantu. When Marie was only a week old, her father was murdered by Simba rebels because they opposed mixed race relationships. Her and her mother eventually escaped and were able to move to Belgium since her father was a Belgium citizen. Crazy. Read the rest of the story at the Zap Mama’s wiki.

Leak of the Day: Zion-I – “Rawww” ft. Do D.A.T., Deuce Eclipse, & Bambu

I’m a liiiittle late on this, but go download the new Zion-I mixtape, The Search & The Seizure. It’s part of the marketing push leading up to their new album The Take Over. Having been part of the Zion-I camp towards the end of my time in the Bay, I am one of the few people’s that have an advanced copy of the album secretly guarded in my iTunes. Trust me when I say that The Take Over will be worth the wait. Oooo…I wish I could leak the track with Devin the Dude…but then Zumbi would fly down from Oakland and choke me out with his dreads.

The mixtape comes only as two mp3s, Side A and Side B, with the singles available as separate tracks. I’ve decided to dissect out the track featuring Do D.A.T., Deuce Eclipse, and Bambu for your listening pleasure:

808’s & Heartbreak…

…is REALLY GOOD. And please believe me when I say I’m as surprised to say that as alot of you Kanye haters would be. Until last night, when an unnamed source emailed me the leak to the entire album, the only song I was hella feeling was “Heartless.” (Don’t front. “Heartless” is the truth!) I liked “Love Lockdown” when it first came out, but it turned me off to see him performing it live WITH auto-tune but was still off key. “Love Lockdown” is actually one of the weaker songs on the album…that and the Weezy joint.

Peep the album version of “Robocop”:

Kanye also a solid reputation for having amazing intro songs:

DISCLAIMER: This is a leak, so the track order might be off, meaning this might not be the actual intro song.

UPDATE: So, the net police deleted the mp3s. All good. Myspace is offering the album for streaming preview on Kanye’s page.

Now, while, musically, this album is good, I must say that the more comfortable Kanye gets creating music from and about his ego (which he has the complete right to do), the less staying power his music has in my musical treasure chest. There’s a “wholesomeness” in his early music, especially on his debut album College Dropout, that really sticks to your soul which, for me, is lacking on his new shit. I’ve long stopped listening to Graduation, but continue to bump Late Registration, my favorite, on every six hour drive to and from Oakland. What is it? Is it the switch in subject matter? Is it because the “All Falls Downs” have been replaced by the “Flashing Lights”?

Big ups to Guerilla Busfare!

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while…after having the first African American voted in office, everything else seems trivial. Almost two weeks later, I’m still processing everything in my head…commentary soon.

BUT, I had the privilege to be the special guest dj for Devil’s Pie, the soul party that I founded last year. The theme: Erykah vs. Jill. Needless to say, it was an amazing night. Erykah won, btw.

Live mix coming soon…

An emcee is only as good as his DJ…and vice versa.

FREE pie every Devil’s Pie…

Thank you Namu Bar, again, for providing the space for soul to happen…and thank you, Papa-Lo, for keeping it going!
