From Steal This Album (Dogday, 1998 )
The Coup, more than Dead Prez, Public Enemy, Immortal Technique, or Souljah Boy (kidding), are my personal heroes/sheroes in the “Revoutionary Music” (*gag* @ that term) genre. Here’s why:
1. They’re from Oakland.
2. Boots Riley tells a story like no other. He’s the Slick Rick of Oakland. (see Bonus 1 below)
3. No one else can speak the truth nowadays as funky as The Coup. While most of the public had their undergarments in a bunch over the infamous original cover of Party Music, their fourth album, the real news shoulda been how amazing the actual music was! Something alot of folks don’t know is Boots and crew actually compose, write, and produce most of their own stuff. (see Bonus 2 below)
4. PAM THE FUNKSTRESS.
5. Did I mention they’re from Oakland?

One of the greatest story raps ever: The Coup – “Fat Cats, Bigga Fish”

FIRST FUCK SONG OF 2009!
Sorry for the hiatus. It was hard to think of Fuck Songs to post amidst the genocide and murder that heralded the start of the Gregorian New Year.
But, my native New Year is here, and I’m feeling refreshed!
DOWNLOAD: Marvin Gaye – “Since I Had You”
From I Want You (Motown, 1976)
To be fair, Marvin’s whole I Want You album is pretty much one giant fuck song. But “Since I Had You” stuck out to me amongst the ten song orgy with its downtempo, steady-grooved intro. An intro like this begs to be sampled, looped, and repeated forever on some steady dusk to dawn teeth-clenchin’ grindin’ tip:

Pharcyde’s take on the sample: The Pharcyde – “Otha Fish” (L.A. Jay Remix)

My take on the sample: Do D.A.T. – “Davin’s Lament” (prod. by DJ Phatrick)

It’s not just the Chinese who celebrate y’all. Recognize.
Here’s my cyber hong bao for yall:

DOWNLOAD: Onra – “The Anthem”
From Chinoiseries (Bo Bun Records, 2007)
Onra is a French Vietnamese producer/musician who went to Vietnam in 2006, painstakingly found 32 old Vietnamese and Chinese records, and made a song with each one. The result is Chinoiseries. “The Anthem” samples a Chinese record. I know because I’m Chinese…and an 1/8th Vietnamese.
BONUS: Onra and Quetzal – “In My Place”
From Tribute (Bo Bun Records, 2006)
copied from Smoking Section:
As if the story couldn’t get any more tragic, the Bay’s KTVU broadcast additional footage of the scene moments before Oscar Grant was murdered by BART cops. The cellphone footage shows another BART cop, named Tony Pirone according to the San Francisco Chronicle, snuff Grant. Oscar Grant immediately puts his hands up and drops to the ground. The officer is the same one seen with his knee in Grant’s back in the widely spread video of Grant’s murder.
Currently, the officer remains uncharged pending an internal affairs investigation.
