What happened to Soulstice?!
Back in 2000, when I first touched down in the Bay, I remember discovering Mark Farina, Mushroom Jazz, and Om Records (yes, late pass please). One of the first cds I bought to explore that sound was a compilation from Om called Om Lounge 5. While alot of the tracks were too spacey and electronic for my tastes, this one has stuck with me until now:

What makes this song classic for me is half Gina Rene’s beautiful vocals, and half J-Boogie’s remix magic. Those scratch phrases are so necessary.
J-Boogie is the Bay Area’s modern renaissance man. If he’s not traveling around the world djing solo, he’s helming Dubtronic Science, his project that incorporates musicians and vocalists into a live band /DJ fusion set. OR maybe he’s hosting Beatsauce Radio, one of Frisco’s longest running Hip Hop shows, which recently moved bases from KUSF to brooklynradio.net. OR maybe he’s remixing Sun-Ra or Goapele. OR maybe he’s just being one of the coolest, easy going personalities in the scene, which, in this industry of egos, is hard to find.

DEVIL’S PIE IS COMING TO THE CITY OF ANGELS!
DEVIL’S PIE is the soul party I started at NAMU BAR in San Francisco a lil over a year ago. I actually had the idea way back in 2004 when we were brainstorming a name for what eventually became HELLA, the Oaklandish (R.I.P.) party TREAT U NICE, DO D.A.T., and I threw. I really just wanted a space to play what I really wanted to play without the pressure of maintaining a dance vibe or fielding obnoxious requests; a night of feel-good soul music: anything from Aretha to Amel, Bilal to Bobby (Womack AND Brown!), Cee-Lo to Chaka (Khan AND Zulu!). Basically, I wanted to be able to play a whole night of FUCK SONGS and have folks there enjoy it.
In 2007, I quit my full-time job, toured Southeast Asia, came back, and started Devil’s Pie. What started as a intimate joint for the homies to kick it, became a pretty unique scene in Bay Area nightlife. We started having monthly themed tribute nights where guest DJs spun sets paying homage to soul legends or sub-genres. Past tributes include Sade, James Brown, UK Soul, and Erykah vs. Jill. You can download DJ sets from these tribute nights below.
While DEVIL’S PIE is being held strong by DJ WONWAY, PAPA LO, and DO D.A.T. in Frisco, I’m bringing the love to LA!
DEVIL’S PIE LA will be located at the swanky VERDUGO BAR in Glassell Park. This time, I’m sharing DJ duties with DJ ROZA, my DJ soul sister who has an almost identical taste in music but much deeper crates (or hard drive!). We are also partnering with local cafe/bakery BUTTER TART CAFE to bring you FREE baked goodies.
