VIDEO: Loves Of A DJ – A Short Documentary About Me!

Sometime late in June of 2011, I received an email from a USC film student named Faroukh Virani. He was a part special course called the Global Exchange Workshop where 7 USC film students were paired with 7 students the Communications University of China in Beijing. Him and his partner, Bobbi Dai, were interested in making a short documentary addressing issues of race and identity in Asian American Hip Hop. Their plan was to interview as many Asian Americans involved with Hip Hop as possible. Long story short, they ended up focusing the documentary on me and my passions as a DJ & educator. I am really happy with the outcome as it gives me a chance to rave about being Chinese American, about being a Chinese American DJ, & about why I’ve chosen education as my main priority in life.

Our youth program, SESSIONS LA, is featured in this video alot…we are trying to save it right now. If you like what I do with the youth, please please please donate to our SAVE SESSIONS IndieGoGo campaign:

DOWNLOAD: Native Guns – “1995″ (DJ Phatrick Remix)

Recently, O-Dub interviewed me for one of his Sidebar Podcasts and put my remix of “1995″ in the intro. I just realized that it’s been almost 5 years since we put out that mixtape. As fate would have it, this was the last project we put out before everyone went their separate ways as musicians.

This is the first and probably last time I’ll ever do a “jacking for beats” DJ remix for anything. I am really proud of how it turned out and hope folks recognize the amount of work it took to do something like this using only turntables, records, and Pro Tools.

I don’t make beats often, but after hearing Adele’s “Someone Like You” from her just-released second album, 21, I knew I had to sample it. Bam heard it and wrote one of the most personal songs I’ve ever heard from him. This is in honor of International Women’s Day & Women’s History Month.

From the upcoming Short Changed bonus EP off the Exact Change re-release. (Beatrock Music, April 2011)

FYI: This is the correct version of the song. The one posted on 2DopeBoyz is an older mix.

Official blurb:

March, in case you were unaware, is Women’s History Month. Los Angeles’ own, Bambu, leaks a song that takes a look at domestic violence from a personal perspective. The song speaks on his family history with violence in the home, as well as his own struggles with it, even touching on the normalcy of such violence against women in our own Hip Hop culture. For this one, DJ Phatrick stepped out from behind the turntables to produce, sampling Adele’s “Someone Like You.” A video is set to drop at the end of the month and the song will also be included on Bambu’s …Exact Change… re-release bonus EP, Short Changed, dropping on April 29, 2011 through Beatrock Music Label.
