SXSW 2009 Discovery: Black Spade

BLACK SPADE

After discovering Anya Marina, Bam, Zoneil, and I rushed over to the SmokingSection / NahRight marathon hip hop showcase with hopes of grabbin’ some free Taco Cabana – which, for those not knowin’, is the best fuckin’ Tex Mex foodchain EVER! Imagine El Pollo Loco goodness combined with JackInTheBox-like menu options – no luck though, false promises.

While we wait for the Blue Scholars to perform, a trio of St. Louis emcees open up the show, including Black Spade.

DOWNLOAD 2: Black Spade – “Good Crazy”
Both songs from To Serve With Love (Om Records, 2008)

Even before his formal set, dude perked my ears. He was behind his MPC playing futuristic beats and singing/adlib-ing for the first emcee, Rockwell Knuckles. By the time he got into “Good Crazy” in his own set, me and Lambo were singing along and fist punching along with the hook.

Another late pass, I know. Especially since the homie, Nick James, remixed a couple of tracks from To Serve With Love LAST YEAR! Download them here.

EVENT: 2.28.09 | “A SONG FOR OURSELVES” World Premier ft. Blue Scholars, Bambu, & Kiwi | Aratani Theatre, LA

During the 1970s when Asians in America were invisible to the country – and more importantly even to themselves – the late Chris Iijima’s music provided the voice and identity an entire generation had been in search of. Through animated photographs, intimate home movies, archival footage and Chris’ own songs, A SONG FOR OURSELVES, shows how Chris’ music unleashed the contagious energy of the Asian American Movement with an unrelenting passion for social justice and a life well lived.

This song is part of a mixtape I’m working on right now for Tad Nakamura’s newest documentary A Song For Ourselves and the premiere of it in LA on Feb. 28 featuring performances from Blue Scholars, Bambu, and Kiwi.

The film documents the life of Chris Iijima, a Japanese American musician, activist, educator, and father, who’s music was the soundtrack for the Asian American movement in the late 60s, early 70s.

For the mixtape, I’m arranging Chris’s music along with Blue Scholars, Bambu, Kiwi, and Native Guns songs, interwoven with sound bites from the movie. We’re also doing exclusive remixes which sample Chris’s music and feature verses from Geo, Bam, and Kiwi. “When Will The Time Come?” is the first of these to be recorded. The beat is produced by Will Bracy (Oakland producer and former student of mine), and samples “Jonathan Jackson” by Chris and his fellow A Grain Of Sand members, Nobuko Miyamoto and Charlie Chin. When Bam heard it, he wrote the whole song in one hour.

The mixtape drops late January.

Song of the Year: M.I.A. – “Paper Planes”

I remember a year ago, Steph and I were sitting on the homie Ben’s couch at his house in Saigon, Vietnam, and listening to a leaked version of M.I.A.’s second album, Kala. To be honest, on first listen, we weren’t feeling it. Keep in mind, we were HUGE fans of Arular. Feeling a little disappointed, my impatient ass was about to turn the stereo off and go on a bahn xeo run when the Clash horn/guitar sample that opens “Paper Planes,” blasts through the speakers. Needless to say we forgot about the crepe.

Today, I still consider Arular a stronger album then Kala. But “Paper Planes” is M.I.A.’s greatest song made thus far in her career…and a year later, it’s spreading beyond her typical indie-electronic-blipster-ilovebailefunk-progressive fanbase. spreading fast.

CASE IN POINT 1:

(via the usual suspects)

This song from T.I.’s Paper Trail, which might possibly be the greatest collabo track of 2008, samples a line from “Paper Planes.” The credits should really say “featuing M.I.A.” since she, by far, as the greatest swagger of all the voices on the track, [wink].

CASE IN POINT 2:

The Pineapple Express trailer:

BONUS 1:

Diplo, the producer of “Paper Planes” and M.I.A. (they were once a couple) at home singing an early version of the song.

The original sample for “Paper Planes”, from the classic album Combat Rock by The Clash.

BONUS 3:

UPDATE:
“Swagger Like Us” is produced by Yeezy.
