WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Sade Tribute Pt. 2, LA edition! The first one holds dear in my heart because it was the one that launched the rest of the Tribute Series and live mixes. I have to give credit to DMADNESS inspiring and initiating that idea. Please check out the man’s blog. Not merely a dope and seasoned Bay Area DJ, he’s also an amazing educator, mentor, poet, and husband. Uh…DUH. This is where I jacked the name from. There actually isn’t such a thing as Devil’s Pie…but the concept, the duality, the temptation contained in that two-word song title along with D’Angelo and DJ Premier’s music inspired the creation of this party. Really, Devil’s Pie is inspired by the entire feel of Voodoo, which to me is one of the greatest modern soul albums ever. Read the wikipedia page on the making of Voodoo HERE. A must read.

BUTTER TART’S CRANBERRY-OAT COOKIE
The first pastry I tried at Butter Tart. With cookies, or sweets in general, or life in general, it’s about balance. And the Butter Tart’s cranberry-oat cookie is a perfect balance of softness, texture, and sweetness. But, there needs to be SOME excitement also…which is where the icing swirls on top come in like a mohawk sported by your high school’s valedictorian.

This one’s a twofer: SYLVIA STRIPLIN released the 12″ single “Give Me Your Love” along with “You Can’t Turn Me Away” on the b-side…double heaters produced by THE man (a masterful jazz/soul artist, writer, producer, collaborator, who is ubiquitously sampled), ROY AYERS on his Uno Melodic Label (1980). “Give Me Your Love” hits the sweet spot with a bubblin boogie beat and the b-side… all i’ll say is, it’s straight MONEY (ha!). Both are undoubtedly DEVIL’S PIE sureshots.

SHUGGIE OTIS provides the perfect balance of spiritual upliftment, feel-good soulfulness, and getdown funk on this title track of his second album. Although I just used a bunch of generic words to describe the song, really, “Inspiration Information” is the closest thing to the PERFECT Devil’s Pie song. Another permanent mp3 in my Serato crate. Since we’re covering a variety of soulful flavas, i’ll provide something on the funky soul tip. Betty Davis (former wife of jazz legend Miles Davis) brought the classic bad girl anthem “Anti-Love Song” from her self-titled debut album (1973). Her sexual confidence and fiery vocals over a deep, raw bass line will crawl into your mind and make you sweat. The world wasn’t ready for Betty’s straight talk and fierce beauty back then, but her soul (pun intended) lives through all the hard-knock, independent women today (raising my hand).

This is a pastry I often indulge in during Chinese/Vietnamese New Year and at dim sum restaurants. They’re such neat little things and quite tasty… deep-fried but light and sweet, made plain or commonly filled with mung bean or red bean paste. I heard somewhere that the Chinese believe if you eat sesame balls, your fortunes will expand like the dough expands when it fries… shoot, gimme a whole bag of ’em!
